PARTS OF SPEECH
Words in a sentence perform various functions. So according to functions words are classified in eight classes called Parts of Speech.
They are: 1. Noun 2. Pronoun 3. Verb 4. Adjective 5. Adverb 6. Preposition 7. Conjunction 8. Interjection
1. NOUN
A noun is a word which is used to refer to a person or thing. A noun is a 'naming word'. A noun is either the subject or the object in a sentence.
Examples: boy, cow, pen, tree, India etc.
2. PRONOUN
A pronoun is a word which is used instead of a noun.
Examples: I, we, he, she, it, this, that, whom, anybody, myself etc.
3. VERB
A verb is a word which is used to say what someone of something does or what happens to them or to give information about them. A verb is a keyword in a sentence.
Examples: go, play, read, open, make, study, give etc.
4. ADJECTIVE
An adjective is a word which is used with a noun to describe or point out the person, place, thing, animal etc. called an adjective.
Examples: old, small, happy, weak, sweet, nice etc.
5. ADVERB
An adverb is a word which modifies the meaning of a verb or an adjective.
Examples: quickly, always, there, gently, very, fast etc.
6. PREPOSITION
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show how the noun or pronoun stands in relation to some other word in the sentence.
Examples: in, at, to, by, with, on, over, of, between, for, from, under etc.
7. CONJUNCTION
A conjunction is a word that joins together sentences and sometimes words.
Examples: and, but, or, as, until, because, though, yet etc.
8. INTERJECTION
An interjection is a word that expresses surprise, fear, joy, sorrow etc.
Examples: hurrah, alas, oh etc.
